Oak Brook Park District referendum sees split results

OAK BROOK — Voters Nov. 6 strongly supported one of two questions regarding the terms of commissioners on an advisory referendum of the Oak Brook Park District.
With all 18 precincts reporting, a question asking if terms should be decreased to four years from six scored 4,257, or 80 percent of the vote. A question asking voters if they favored an increase in the number of commissioners to seven from five was voted down, 2,796 to 2,229.
The two questions were placed on the ballot after residents signed petitions asking for the advisory referendum.
Bill Lindeman, 74, a 38-year resident of Oak Brook, filed the petitions for the referendum. He said a group of about 12 Oak Brook residents collected petition signatures. They needed 340 signatures for each of the two questions to have them placed on the ballot.
“I think the four-year term is essential,” Lindeman said before the Nov. 6 vote. “I do think more people would run if the term was four years, instead of six, and when more people run you get a little discussion going about any issues before the election.”~.
