OAKBROOK TERRACE

The Oakbrook Terrace Historical Society received one of DuPage County Historical Society’s 14 Recognition Awards for its dedication to preserving local history.

The Oakbrook Terrace Historical Society is among the youngest in DuPage County, and will celebrate its first anniversary in May. With the support of the Oakbrook Terrace mayor and City Council the society received 501(c)3 status from the IRS this year.

When the city celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008 a few local residents came together and began gathering items from families and businesses to display at the city’s event. From there it evolved into forming the historical society.

Residents Bob Shanahan, Dennis Greco, Debbie Shanahan, Ave Berkshire and Shirley Thomas make up the board. The society is in the process of cataloging and organizing many items and learned its current location is an authentic Sears Homart kit home. A membership drive began in June 2012 offering both yearly and lifetime memberships, in an effort to raise funds.

In July the society partnered with several Oakbrook Terrace businesses put together coupons, offers, and/or promotional items from the businesses and placing them inside a canvas tote bag with the Oakbrook Terrace Historical Society logo. These bags are now available with a donation.

For membership information, call Ave at (630) 833-0537. Anyone joining before May 2013 will be a Charter Member. Send donations to Oakbrook Terrace Historical Society, 17W245 16th St., Oakbrook Terrace IL 60181. For more information call Bob at (630) 834-8661.
