OAK BROOK — Oak Brook and Oakbrook Terrace both will be hosting free outdoor winter events Feb. 10.
The Oak Brook Park District and Oak Brook Civic Association are offering their annual Winterfest from 1 to 4 p.m. at Central Park West, 1450 Forest Gate Road.
The Oakbrook Terrace Park District and the Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association present Family Winter Play Day from 1 to 4 p.m. at Terrace View Park, 17W063 Hodges Road.
Activities at both events will depend on the weather, as ice and/or snow are required for the likes of sledding and ice skating.
Winterfest in Oak Brook is scheduled to include crafts, sledding on a new sled hill, curling, ice skating, snow shoeing, bon fires, sleigh rides, mule rides, a historical booth set up by the Civic Association, and concessions for sale throughout the afternoon. If snow permits, a snowman contest is scheduled from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., and Scribblemonsters will present children’s musical entertainment from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
“Winterfest is about getting people outside in the winter to enjoy the outdoors,” said Karen Spandikow, assistant director of recreation for the Oak Brook Park District. “We’re hoping that the weather allows us to have all of our outdoor activities, but we do have things, like crafts, indoors, so we’ll be having this event, regardless of the weather.”
Spandikow said Winterfest participants are welcome to bring their own ice skates and sleds; however, skates and sleds will be available for use by those who don’t bring their own.
“We’ll have the fires going so people can warm up, and everything is free, except for the concessions,” she said.

Oakbrook Terrace’s free Family Winter Play Day features a variety of games, activity stations, and winter sports along with a visit from Frosty the Snowman for photo opportunities.
While the weather during the Family Winter Play Day Children will have some effect on activities, children will have the opportunity to try on snowshoes.
“If there’s no snow, they can just do it on the grass,” said Lian Knight, Lake View Nature Center supervisor.
Other games and activities, including a nature hike, will be offered along with hot chocolate and s’mores. The Lake View Nature Center, which is featuring a winter exhibit about black bears, will be open during the Family Winter Play Day.
