Pioneer book club meets @ 7 p.m. Thursday
Updated: May 16, 2012 12:51PM
The next book for the Pioneer Page Turners’ live chat book discussion will be State of Wonder by Ann Patchett.
Unassuming medical researcher Marina Singh finds herself on a journey that will take her from her Minnesota home to the Amazon basin to investigate the death of her lab partner, Anders Eckman, who’d been developing a miracle fertility drug. Eckman’s wife learns he had died of fever and was quickly buried, which leads to more questions than answers.
What follows is a quest by a woman more comfortable in the cool suburbs of Minnesota than the heat of the Heart of Darkness. The company wants their drug, Mrs. Eckman wants answers, and Singh wants simply to unravel this knot and return to the comfort of her home. The problem is that the more she discovers, the more complicated the knot becomes.
State of Wonder is the book featured during Wilmette Public Library’s One Book, Everybody Reads event. The event will feature a number of programs around the book including a visit with the author at 2 p.m. May 20 at Wilmette Junior High School Auditorium.
