Hinsdale’s BAMtheatre offers summertime educational theatre programs including BAM College Intensive, BAM Youth Theatre, and the Broadway Workshop Series. Classes for adults
The 24th annual Janice Borla Vocal Jazz Camp will be presented July 22-27 at North Central College in Naperville. Participants typically range in age and background from high school and college students to adult professional vocalists and jazz educators. The curriculum is designed specifically for the solo jazz vocalist. Daily activities include workshops in jazz improvisation, performance styles and techniques, and solo performance preparation as well as artist master classes, vocal jazz history and music theory. There are also nightly faculty artist concerts, informal student jam sessions, and a final concert. Tuition is $625; housing and meals are available for an additional $300. Casting call
The West Suburban Symphony seeks string players to perform Verdi’s Requiem on June 24 in Naperville. Rehearsals begin in late May. The Taste of Wheaton, May 31-June 3 in downtown Wheaton. A ribbon cutting and craft beer tasting event will kick off the event at 5 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Park, located at the intersection of Hale and Karlskoga streets. Flagg Creek Heritage Society Museum, 7425 S. Wolf Road, Burr Ridge, and the Robert Vial House, 7375 S. Wolf Road, Burr Ridge, will open two new exhibits from 2-4 p.m. June 3. The Heritage Society Museum will exhibit “Post-War and Mid-Century Modern Home Life,” featuring a period den with furnishings, carpet and fabrics augmented by kitchen gear, toys, magazines, model cars and more. Visitors to the Robert Vial House will view “The Fabulous Fifties,” an exhibit of 1950s fashions for women and men, and will be welcomed by a reception offering “mocktails” and finger foods of the period. Ryan: Holes and Flow.” Using data compiled from the Elmhurst Quarry and similar sites, Ryan builds gallery-sized, multidimensional installations. In Holes and Flow, he is particularly interested in the abstract shapes of different quarry elevations throughout stages of development and erosion, especially in the keyway, a man-made arch that allows for the flow of diverted flood waters from Salt Creek. Through June 1: “Peggy Macnamara: Field Work.” Macnamara’s work is about the study of nature, and her subjects — birds, insects, small creatures and their habitats — surround her every day as artist-in-residence at the Field Museum. Through careful observation, she gathers the precise information she needs to paint large, colorful watercolors that lyrically interweave art and science. Through June 9: “Gordon Powell: Details,” an exhibit of abstract painted wood assemblages. Through June 9: “Mario Trejo: I Defy You,” wall-size drawings of manic marks. Trejo draws hundreds of thousands of marks in each work as a method of testing the artistic limits of time, space and numerical systems.
