Aspiring artists from all over Oak Brook submitted 40 pieces during the Oak Brook Park District’s Camp & Aquatics Guide Cover Contest.

All of the works will be on display at the Oak Brook Park District Family Recreation Center; and the winner will be announced during a pool party that begins at 5 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Family Aquatic Center, 1450 Forest Gate Road.

The winning design will be chosen by a Park District panel. The winning artist will have his or her work published on the cover of the Camp & Aquatics Guide, which is scheduled to be delivered to Oak Brook residents during the week of Feb. 27, and he or she will also receive a personalized iPad, courtesy of the newly created Oak Brook Park District Foundation.

The contest is part of the Park District’s 50th anniversary celebration and was inspired by a similar competition that was held back in 1971. At that time, the Board of Park Commissioners challenged artists from all over the greater Oak Brook area to submit a design for the Oak Brook Park District insignia. The winning work was a piece created by eighth-grader, Judy Truedson, who has grown up to have become none other than an artist with her own comic strip in Boston and an art pushcart that she has been operating since 1985 in Faneuil Hall.

“We have been so fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Butler School District 53 on this project,” said Jessica Alexenko, marketing manager for the Park District.

According to Alexenko, District 53 Superintendent Sandra Martin solicited feedback from art teachers when the Park District was developing the competition. Brook Forest Elementary art teacher Mike Divelbiss was integral in not only getting kids excited about the competition, but helping them understand the purpose and the individual elements required for the competition.

Anyone who submitted a cover design is welcome to attend the awards pool party, free of charge. Contestants may bring up to two guests, but must contact Jessica Alexenko at the Park District to RSVP by Wednesday. Additional guests will be asked to pay the admission fee. Attendees are invited to stay for the Park District’s Dive-In Movie presentation of “The Sword in the Stone,” which is an animated movie that was in production in 1962, the same year the Park District was founded.

For information or to RSVP for the awards ceremony and pool party, contact Alexenko at (630) 645-9539 or jalexenko@obparks.org.
