Man killed, trooper hurt in Eisenhower crash

Updated: February 12, 2012 9:42AM

(ADDISON) A man died and a trooper was hurt early Saturday when another vehicle struck the Illinois State Police car they were sitting in on the Eisenhower Expressway in west suburban Addison.

About 1:20 a.m., the trooper had pulled over on eastbound Interstate 290 near Mill Road to assist with a non-injury traffic accident the man had been involved in, Illinois State Police spokeswoman Maria Navarro said. The trooper activated his emergency lights and positioned his vehicle to block the left two lanes of traffic.

The driver -- and sole occupant -- of a 2005 Nissan SUV, who was involved in the initial crash was placed in the rear seat of the squad car, to keep warm, state police said. Soon after, a 2010 Chevrolet Impala rear-ended the state police vehicle.

The man sitting in the back seat of the squad car, 42-year-old Frank S. Caruso of Oak Brook, was taken to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:15 a.m., state police said.

The driver of the Impala was taken to an area hospital, where he was treated and released, state police said.

According to Illinois State Police Elgin District Master Sgt. Bart Lamb, the trooper was taken to Loyola with a possible concussion, and the driver of the vehicle that hit his was taken to Alexian Brothers with non-life-threatening injuries.

While there were no charges or citations filed as of Saturday afternoon, the investigation was ongoing, state police said.
