Suicide prevention

Author and columnist, Dan Savage will be talking about his It Gets Better anti-bullying project at 7 p.m. on Sunday at Elmhurst College in the Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel, 190 Prospect Ave., Elmhurst.

Some Hinsdale Central High School students who belong to a club called SPAN (Suicide Prevention Awareness Network) heard about the event and will be getting some time with Savage beforehand, so that they can give him a $300 donation to It Gets Better.

SPAN’s mission is to educate Hinsdale Central students and staff about the signs of suicidal behavior, who they can go to for help if they or if someone else is in danger and how suicides can be prevented.

The club’s faculty adviser, an AP psychology teacher, told the club about the It Gets Better project at the start of the school year. She said her students “fell in love with the message, not just for GLBT kids, but for all high school students. They feel that we all need to know that time heals and that things do get better; the tough situations high school students face are not the end of the world. So we adopted It Gets Better as our motto for the year.”
