World War II veteran Louis E. Celli is the latest honoree of the York Township Senior Center “Remember When” display in the lobby of York Township Hall , 1502 S. Meyers Road, Lombard.

Celli joined the Army at the age 19 in January 1943. He was a combat engineer and was a member of the 7th Infantry Division, 50th Engineer Combat Battalion. He was part of the assault landings on the islands of Kiska, Kwajalein, Leyte and Okinawa. He received 6 Battle Stars and a Purple Heart for his service. He was discharged on Nov. 20, 1945, with the rank of Tech 5 which is equal to a corporal. After the war, he bought and sold Army surplus all over the country.

Supervisor John W. Valle said, “We are proud to honor Louis E. Celli for his service to our country. The ‘Remember When’ display is our way of expressing our gratitude to Louis and all veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces for the sacrifices they have made in the cause of freedom.”
