Hinsdale woman disputes disorderly citation after Central game

A Hinsdale woman is disputing the claims of an Illinois High School Association basketball referee about an incident that led to the woman being cited in Elmhurst for disorderly conduct.
Karen Anlauf was in attendance at a Jan. 27 boys basketball game when Hinsdale Central played at York High School.
Greg Hartzheim, one of three referees who worked the game, made the complaint against Anlauf.
Hartzheim, who said he has been an IHSA basketball official for 11 years, said Anlauf walked into a locker room that had been designated for officials after the game,
confronted him and pushed him.
“She had some things to say and then pushed me,” Hartzheim said. “She told me that her son played (Amateur Athletic Association) ball with one of the York players, who had a big game that night, and that the York guy was a dirty player.”
Anlauf’s version is different.
“A couple of our players had bloody noses because of what went on during the game,” she said. “I couldn’t understand why the officials let that go on, and I wanted to ask them.
“I didn’t know it was the officials’ locker room. I saw them walk into a room right after the game and opened the door right after they walked in. They were just standing there. (Hartzheim) started screaming at me and walked out. If anything, he pushed me when he brushed by me as he walked out.”
Anlauf said Hartzheim went to get a police officer, who spoke with her about the incident and told her not to worry about it.
“I didn’t think it was a big deal,” she said. “I found out a couple of weeks after the fact when I got a phone call that there had been a complaint filed. Should I have gone and talked to him? Maybe, not, but I had every right as a parent to talk to the guy.”
Anlauf said she was given a court date in April, which was continued to May 3. However, she missed that court date.
“That was my mistake,” she said. “I thought it was on May 4, and I did show up at that time. I was told I had missed my court date by a day, and they gave me a new date in July.”
Online court records indicated there is a scheduled July 19 court date in Addison.
