Oak Brook playground arson does $10K in damage

Oak Brook police are looking for two suspects in connection with a fire set early Saturday morning near Brook Forest Elementary School.
At about 4:45 a.m. June 23, two male suspects, each about 18-20 years-old, arrived at the playground just outside of the elementary school, 60 Regent Drive in the Brook Forest subdivision.
According to a police department release, the playground equipment was set on fire just after 5 a.m., and the suspects fled the area. The Oak Brook Fire Department extinguished the fire a short time later.
Butler District 53 Superintendent Sandra Martin said the fire department was called by “an anonymous person,” and the fire department extinguished the fire about a half hour after the blaze started.
“While most of the equipment is made of steel, a number of parts are made of plastic and rubber,” Martin said. “Damage is visible on the steps and the slide has been completely destroyed.”
Martin said district maintenance staff will repair the equipment by the time school starts in August. The release estimates damages to be about $10,000.
“Thankfully, no one was injured as a result of this unfortunate incident,” Martin said. “We are very disappointed that someone would do this.”
Martin said district staff is working closely with the Oak Brook Police Department to review digital recordings of the area around the time of the fire.
