Hinsdale Humane Society pushes no-fee feline adoption

HINSDALE — The Hinsdale Humane Society is hoping a new no-fee adoption policy will increase adoptions of its cats.
Starting in November, the organization waived the adoption fee for cats 1 year or older.
“We always have plenty of cats to pick from,” said Pam Salomone, the society’s special events director.
The adoption fees for cats and kittens ranged from $50 to $175. Senior citizens, however, were not charged a fee to adopt older cats.
To promote the no-fee feline policy, the humane society recently held an Open House. People who adopted a cat during the Nov. 3 event received a gift bag filled with pet treats and toys.
Although plenty of guests attended the Open House, only two adopted an older cat that weekend. Two younger cats, 6 and 9 months old, and three dogs, however were adopted, Salomone said.
Workers at the humane society hope some of the visitors will return to take home a new pet.

The Hinsdale Humane Society is located at 22 N. Elm Street in Hinsdale. Regular business hours are 2-8 p.m. Tuesday; noon to 6 p.m., Wednesday through Friday; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends.
