Oak Brook police remind drivers to be safe

OAK BROOK — The Oak Brook Police Department and the Illinois Department of Transportation are reminding drivers to be especially cautious behind the wheel over the Thanksgiving holiday period.

Stepped up enforcement for seat belt violators and those drinking and driving is scheduled around Illinois through Nov. 25.

Wearing seat belts is especially important for safety, police said. Statistics indicate that teens, young male adults, nighttime passengers and those traveling in pick-up trucks at night are among those most likely to not wear seat belts.

Late-night hours are when the largest percentage of motorists die in alcohol-related crashes and when the lowest percentage of vehicle occupants wear seat belts.

There were eight traffic fatalities and more than 800 related injuries in Illinois over the 2011 Thanksgiving holiday period, police said.
