Coach Bill Leeberg, who first walked the halls of Montini High School in Lombard as the doors opened in 1966, says “so long” after more than 700 wins on the baseball diamond and 34 years in the classroom.
The festivities in June began with Leeberg entertaining attendees with his fire eating skills and ended with his lively rendition of “Casey at the Bat.” Family, college buddies, coworkers, supervisors, classmates, students and athletes filled the Montini Catholic High School cafeteria June 15 to share fond memories and great laughs as they honored the well-loved, record-holding legend. Presenters included: Current and former coaches Michael Bukovsky ‘83, Don Riley, Chris Andriano, and Bob Landi; former students and players Scott Sobkowiak ’95, Bill Barrett ’79, Mike Manna ’70, Bryan McNamara ’86, Kevin Tyrrell ’02.
After graduating in 1970, Leeberg headed to Lewis University, furthering his education and his love of baseball in the Lasallian tradition. He returned to Montini in 1974, has served under seven principals and four athletic directors, and influenced more than 400 young lives.
Leeberg, who in his early years coached baseball, worked in the enrollment and admissions office, and taught a variety of English courses (most noticeably from the stories of the night, Speech), leaves the diamond with 732 wins and 288 losses. More than his winning record, colleagues and those who were taught and coached by Leeberg, are inspired by his passion for life, learning, and the game of baseball.
Montini Catholic wishes Bill Leeberg well on his retirement and thanks all those who attended the Roast to honor Leeberg and to support the baseball field renovations as part of Phase III of the capital campaign.
