Adult FYI session set for July 19
Adults 21 and over are invited to attend an FYI session on Thursday July 19, at 6 p.m. in the Student Services Center, Room 2201, at College of DuPage.
Whether changing careers, attending college for the first time, enhancing job skills or for personal enrichment, attendees will learn about College of DuPage programs and services that are geared toward their specific needs. The session will include information on adult admissions, the Adult Fast Track Program and the Career Services Center, as well as information about College of DuPage services offered in conjunction with workNet DuPage in Lisle, a federal job retraining and career counseling program developed through the Workforce Investment Act.
An “express tour” of the college will be available at 5:30 p.m. before the FYI session, and a full campus tour will also be offered after the session.

Summer tutoring available
College of DuPage is offering free, course-based peer tutoring through Aug. 2 in a variety of subjects for enrolled students this summer.
Students who are enrolled in Math 0460, 0470, 0481, and 0482 can attend the Peer Tutoring Drop-In Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Learning Commons, located in the Student Resource Center, Room 2102.
Students who are enrolled in ESL 0955 and 0956 may attend ESL conversation circles on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 11 to 11:50 a.m. and noon to 12:50 p.m. in SRC 2102.
College of DuPage offers online tutoring for students enrolled in Accounting (0430, 1110, and 1140), Anatomy and Physiology (1500, 1551, 1552, 1571, and 1572), Chemistry (0485, 1105, 1211, 1551, and 1552), Math (0460, 0470, 0481, and 0482), Microbiology (1420), Physics (1201), Psychology (1100), Spanish (1101 and 1102), and for general writing assistance. News coordinator attends global
summit
For years, WDCB 90.9 FM Public Radio News and Public Affairs Coordinator Brian O’Keefe watched video feed from the annual Technology, Environment and Design Global summits. When he applied for TEDGlobal 2012: Radical Openness on a whim, he was stunned to be one of 1,500 participants worldwide selected to travel to Edinburgh, Scotland, for this year’s event.
“To be chosen to attend this conference is a great honor,” he said. “I had a chance to review the attendee list, and the caliber of people going is amazing.”
From June 25 to 29, O’Keefe and his fellow participants will experience a variety of programs led by a panel of moderators that are designed to encourage the sharing of ideas from a broad spectrum of people. Participants join discussion groups following each session, with the unique collection of individuals offering a broad expanse of views from around the world.
“This year’s topic really gets at the issue of online privacy,” O’Keefe said. “I recently read the results of a study that said more people are worried about online privacy than about losing their job. It’s become such a huge issue and social media really has changed the way we think about this issue.”
One component of TEDGlobal is a survey that provides each participant with a unique list of people they may want to meet and talk with throughout the weeklong event. For O’Keefe, that means he may be chatting with a journalist/climate expert from Scotland, a former European soccer star or the deputy director of UNICEF. Currently studying new media in graduate school, the 30-year radio veteran is excited to talk about the evolving communication field, particularly in the area of social media.
“When I graduated from college and was hired for my first job, I had a typewriter and a reel-to-reel. Despite all the changes in the field, I don’t think any of those innovations hold any water compared to social media. I think it’s a game changer,” O’Keefe said. “I expect TED will help me to be better prepared for the next game changer and get a jump on the way we’re going to communicate in the future.”
Phi Theta Kappa chapter earns honor
The College of DuPage chapter of Phi Theta Kappa was recently selected as the Most Distinguished chapter in Illinois for the second year in a row at the annual Phi Theta Kappa Illinois Regional convention.
Four members of the College of DuPage chapter also received individual awards at the convention: Brittany Stirmell of Roselle, Outstanding Chapter Officer; Jeremy Bernas of Geneva, Regional Leader of Distinction; Colleen Fessler of Batavia, Regional Spirit; and Kristine Ilagan of Lombard, Hall of Honor Officer.
In addition, for the second year in a row, the College of DuPage chapter was ninth runner-up for Most Distinguished chapter at the Phi Theta Kappa International Convention recently held in Nashville. The College also earned awards for Outstanding Honors in Action and Outstanding College-Wide Project.
Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society of two-year colleges that encourages academic achievement and provides opportunity for personal development through honors, leadership, service and fellowship programs.
