Uniquely Thursdays kicked off with Paparockzzi last week and continues this week with Libido Funk Circus, a group new to Hinsdale’s outdoor summer concert series, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary.
Six of the 10 bands on this summer’s schedule will perform for the first time at Uniquely Thursdays, held from 6-9 p.m. every Thursday through Aug. 16 in Burlington Park.
“We mix up the bands every year to keep it fresh,” said Janet Anderson, executive director of the Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the concerts.
People bring their blankets and chairs to relax while they listen to music and visit with neighbors.
The show goes on, rain or shine. In 10 years, only three concerts had to be canceled due to weather, Anderson said. “And that was because of strong winds, not rain.”
During one show, the wind blew the rain onto the band, which was performing under cover, and damaged a soundboard, she said.
Anderson, chamber special events coordinator Kimberly Clements, and a volunteer committee select the bands during the previous fall and winter.
“We attend a showcase in the fall, run by suburban park and recreation districts,” Anderson said.
Numerous bands perform hoping to be booked at local music festivals.
“Bands submit promo kits to us, too, and we work with talent agencies,” she said. “We try to find ones that are a good fit for this community.”
Paparockzzi, comprised of Hinsdale dads, has entertained the community twice before. Also returning are Shy Violet, a female rock group, and Slippery When Wet, a Bon Jovi tribute band.
One of the most popular bands has been 7th Heaven.
“They usually close the season,” said Eva Field, an executive assistant at the Chamber and member of the committee that selects bands. 7th Heaven is her favorite group.
“They draw a crowd and their music is great,” Field said. “They have a following.”
The independent group records and performs their own music, as well as songs from other groups, such as when they sing, “30 Songs in 30 Minutes.”
Libido Funk Circus, which performs this Thursday, formed in 1996 as a 1970s Disco revival band, but their repertoire and showmanship have continued to grow. The group plays music from Motown to today’s hits and bills itself as “Chicago’s premier dance and party band.”
Burlington Park is at Washington and Chicago avenues. Beer and wine are sold at the event, along with food from local restaurants, but people are not allowed to bring their own alcohol.
