Lyons Township senior Ricky Razo is considered one of the top lacrosse goalies in the state.
He’s also humble.
After LT earned a rare shutout in the high-scoring sport by beating rival Hinsdale Central 8-0 Thursday in Hinsdale, Razo was quick to praise his teammates.
“Credit goes to our team defense out there,” Razo said. “Team defense is something we strive to be the best at and that makes it easier for me. I just go out there and try and make saves.”
Razo made 11 saves, many of the spectacular variety, to notch his first shutout of the season.
Hinsdale Central (3-5), which was playing its fourth straight game against teams ranked in the top 10 by laxpower.com, was missing two key attackers in Brendan Flaherty (broken arm) and Matt Santulli (back injury).
It probably wouldn’t have made a difference in the outcome the way Razo performed.
“Ricky is one of the best goalies in Illinois and what he did tonight speaks volumes,” LT coach Bill Kalbfleisch said. “(Hinsdale Central) is their big arch rival, so we wanted to be able to play well. If you play good team defense you’ll be in every game.”
LT (8-1), which is ranked No. 4, scored two goals in each quarter.
Scott Doten had three goals and an assist to pace the Lions offensively, while John Evans added two goals and Will Konstant, Luke Gallagher and Jake Arlowe each had one goal.
“It was tough,” Hinsdale Central coach Tom McBride said. “Our top two attacks were out. Our defense did what it could. We had a lot of good shots, but (Razo) is a good goalie. He made a lot of great saves.”
Razo, had had 19 saves in a loss against Lake Forest, and flirted with a shutout against Evanston April 16 before letting up a couple of goals late.
“Getting a shutout is big,” said Razo, who also had a shutout last season. “I had a chance last game and let two in, so I was itching to have another shot. It’s always a big game-changer.”
