Boys Golf: Lake Forest’s Garity tops Hinsdale Central’s Dolehide in IJGA playoff

CHICAGO — Jack Garrity and Brian Dolehide each played 36 holes in the final Illinois Junior Golf Association tournament of the summer. How about one more?
The sophomores from Lake Forest and Hinsdale Central tied after 36 holes in the IJGA’s Player of the Year Championship Monday at Ridge Country Club. The duo battled in a one-hole playoff to decide the tournament winner for the Junior Boys division. Garrity eventually won with a par on the 386-yard par-4 No. 10 playoff hole to beat Dolehide, who struck his drive into the right fairway bunker and then sent his second shot left of the green. Dolehide missed a 15-foot putt for par.
For both golfers, the final IJGA event was the first time each player has competed in a sudden-death playoff.
“I wanted to get on the fairway, hit the green and sink two putts,” Garrity said. “It’s big. This will give me confidence going into high school.”
Garrity (77-73—150) and Dolehide (74-76—150) will try out Wednesday for each of their varsity teams after playing on the frosh-soph team last season. Garrity played in the same tournament with two other Lake Forest teammates, Martin Montagne and Luke Massar, who hope to make the varsity later this week.
“I thought I hit a good tee shot,” Dolehide said of his playoff hole. “I got unlucky anyway.”
Garrity played in nearly eight IJGA events and plans on expanding his tournaments next summer. Earlier this summer, he finished 40th out of 100 golfers in his biggest tournament of the summer at the Florida Junior Optimist.
Dolehide has created his own niche in golf as the younger brother of former two-time state tennis doubles champion Courtney Dolehide. Even Brian’s younger sister, 13-year-old Caroline, is a rising star in junior tennis. Courtney plays for UCLA and is in Georgia this week for a U.S. Tennis Association national tournament.
When he’s not playing tournaments, Brian has caddied at Butler National in Oak Brook this summer.
“I’ve tried to play in a lot of tournaments. I have not caddied near tournament [dates],” Dolehide said. “I think I have gotten a lot better. [Courtney] never played golf. I think it’s fun and relaxing.”
Benet freshman Alex Bassetto of Naperville earned enough points to capture the player of the year title for the Junior Boys. Naperville North senior Braden Klaise earned the Senior Boys POY title. The girls players of the year were Schaumburg resident and Fremd senior Angie Kim (Senior division) and Wheaton Warrenville South sophomore Kelly Anderson (Junior division).
Wheaton’s Renee Solberg (77-81—158) won the Senior Girls tournament title and Naperville’s Bing Singhsumalee (74-73—147) won the Junior Girls tournament.
Talon Supak (70-71—141) of downstate Washington won the Senior Boys tournament.
