DOWNERS GROVE — Lyons senior Elly Vitek didn’t intend to break any records at the Downers Grove South Sectional Saturday. It just happened.
Lyons’ top swimmer advanced to next weekend’s state meet for the third consecutive time and set a pool record along the way in the 200-yard freestyle when her winning time of 1 minute, 52.96 seconds eclipsed the mark of 1:53.21 established by St. Charles’ Kristen Brennan in 1999.
“It was exciting,” Vitek said. “I had no idea what the pool record was. When I touched the wall, I turned and could see that I broke it.”
Vitek will make return state trips in the 100 and 200 free. She won the 200 free in 52.76 to advance with teammate Louisa Hoffman (53.00). Vitek was third in the 200 free and tied for fourth in the 100 free in last year’s state meet.
She added a couple of state qualifying relays as well, with wins in the 200 free (1:38.48) with Kristine Rosenberger, Hoffman and Kristen Young and in the 400 free (3:33.88), with Lauren Rosenberger, Hoffman and Mackenna Dunn.
Lyons (301 points) edged Hinsdale Central (280) to claim its 13th sectional title and first since 2009.
Other Lyons state qualifiers in multiple events were Hoffman (50 free, 100 free) and Lauren Rosenberger (200 free, 500 free).
Hinsdale Central’s qualifier in two individual events was York transfer Cara LoPiano (200 free, 500 free). Liza Gross (200 IM), Margaret Kaufman (500 free) and Olivia Yu (100 back) also advanced.
For Hinsdale South, sophomore Rachel Hawken advanced by clocking 59.66 in the 100 back, taking second.
